Trophies For Collection

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE GREENS SUB-COMMITTEE; PETER KLEIN
For those of you who unfortunately haven’t been out to the club or been on the front nine of late, you will notice quite a large amount of new vegetation having been planted. In conjunction with our course manager Barry Proctor, we have been creating a vegetation plan for the course which includes removal of undesireable plant species and replacement with both more appropriate and desireable plant types as well as planting in appropriate positioning. Some vegetation has been removed over the last few years due to age, storm damage, rotting and general tree death while others are removed for course and turf issues such as shading of tees/greens/fairways or prevention of airflow. Others have been removed as they have been planted too close to fairway edges, tees and greens or to improve the playability and strategy of holes.
A recent vegetation removal includes the melaleucas and other vegetation around the dam alongside the 7th tee and carry. This has given back an unobstructed view of the entirety of the lake, which we believe has improved the aesthetics of this area markedly.

In moving forwards, over the last 12 months we have planted approximately 633 trees and shrubs and another 130 grasses. Of the trees, their makeup is as follows;
120 Agonis Flexuosa
140 Coastal tea tree
150 Prickly tea tree
50 Hibbertia
40 spotted gums
20 Acacia floribunda
40 Lemon-scented gums
20 Drooping She-Oaks
50 Ironbark Rosea

Please feel free to GOOGLE these plants to enjoy their colours and flowers which we should start to see over coming years.
This process will be ongoing with a much greater amount now set aside in our Greens Budget than has ever been before, for new plants and seedlings purchases. ( from $2,000 to $10,000).
Aside from this, a recent visit to Victoria Golf Club (with whom we have an excellent relationship) gave us some more ideas on ways to improve the vegetation of the areas between tees and fairways as well as other areas of the course. Those of you lucky enough to have a game there or getting to the Australian Masters will appreciate their fantastic vegetation profile. They have been working extensively on it over the last number of years and it has changed out of sight since the 2002 Australian Open was there.

CLUBHOUSE LEVY DUE
1ST OCTOBER 2010

Dear Members,
Over the next week your account being sent to you represents the final installment of the 10 year Clubhouse Renovation Levy.
At this point in time the Committee would like to thank the membership for their ongoing support in helping to provide a first class facility of which we can all be very proud.
The renovations which included new Administration, Bar, Dining and Changing room facilities have resulted in a marked improvement in all aspects of Club life.
The aesthetic changes to the facade and the excellent Functions area have attracted extra revenue to the Cranbourne Golf Club which may not have eventuated had the renovation not taken place.

Thank you once again for your generous support.
Maurice Naftal
Honorary Treasurer

FROM THE PRESIDENT
As members would be aware, Sean Constable ceased employment as Club General Manager earlier this week.

I wish to stress that this was the culmination of a performance management process which was conducted over many months, with careful consideration of many factors.

While Sean’s departure was regrettable, the Committee’s decision was unanimous.

As outlined in our rules, members elect the Committee to manage the affairs of the Club in accordance with the Club’s objectives. This means the Committee has delegated responsibility for the many functions associated with running the Club, including evaluating the performance of the General Manager.

In this sensitive matter it is not appropriate or fair to either Sean or the Committee to divulge further details. I would ask members to respect this and refrain from seeking further details from staff or Committee.

There are arrangements in place for the stable day to day management of the Club with Jo Brooks appointed as Acting General Manager.

The process to recruit a new General Manager has begun and members will be informed of the outcome.

Regards
Peter Jaffe
PRESIDENT

HANDICAPPING ANNOUNCEMENT
2nd Package of Changes to Australian Men's & Women's Handicap System
Golf Australia have recently released details in relation to the 2nd Package of changes to Men’s & Women’s Handicap System. Cranbourne Golf Club expect that these changes will be introduced immediately.

Items included in the 2nd Package are as follows:
1. Complete overhaul of existing four-ball handicapping regulations.
2. Requirement for each affiliated club to have a Handicap Committee.
3. Start to allow widespread use of non-competition scores.
4. Simplification of method for extending score for round of 9-17 holes into 18-hole score. (Note: This method is also to be used by Handicap Committees where a player was meant to have played 18 holes, but stops play FOR ANY REASON after having played at least 9 holes.)
5. Requirement to process for HANDICAP PURPOSES those eligible scores played at any non-Australian course with a USGA Course Rating.
6. Clarification of which scores are eligible for Handicap Purposes.

Members are reminded that one of their fundamental obligations is to return all eligible score cards to the pro shop upon completion of each round. Golf Australia has advised that players who fail to meet this requirement are effectively operating outside of the Australian Men’s & Women’s Handicap System. We ask that you assist the club by returning your score cards (including for incomplete rounds). Please ask the Pro shop if you are unsure of what cards need to be returned.

Stay tuned for further announcements in regards to the above changes. Further information can be obtained from the Golf Australia website www.golfaustralia.org.au or more specifically at http://admin.golfaustralia.org.au/site/_content/document/00007884-source.pdf

COURSE CONDITION
The front 9 has been closed this week – members must remain cognizant that we are experiencing the wettest Winter since 1996!! This being the case, it is advisable that members contact the Pro Shop regarding the state of play before leaving home.

The whole course will be open this weekend, however there will be NO RIDE ON VEHICLES allowed. We are expecting heavy rainfall tonight and tomorrow, members are again advised to contact the Pro Shop before leaving home whilst the rain continues to fall!!

RON BUDGE TROPHY
NOMINATIONS CLOSE
NEXT SATURDAY

Despite an encouraging response from past players and a sprinkling of new candidates, a few vacancies for the 2010 RBT season still exist. The closing date for members to nominate themselves is Saturday, September 11th.
The Ron Budge Trophy is an outstanding opportunity for players who have reached their 55th birthday, to enjoy the competition and camaraderie of their peers.
The competition which enters its 12th season is staged on Friday afternoons during October and November each year, and features 8 Clubs in fairly close proximity to Cranbourne.
The format used is Scratch Matchplay and each Club fields 7 players and an emergency for each of the 7 rounds. The top two placed teams at the end of the home and away stage play off for the trophy with the other 6 clubs competing for the McCafferty Bowl. Cranbourne comprehensively won the Bowl last year.
Members who enjoy 5, 6 or 7 day playing rights are eligible to nominate.
There is no cost other than a $15 registration fee for those taking part and the event is always a highlight on the calendar of regular players.
Even if you would only be available to play a couple of matches you are still urged to nominate. Under the rules of the competition, each team must play at least 12 different players during the season, allowing more players an opportunity to participate.
If you are a senior player with a 13 handicap or better and would like to be considered for Cranbourne’s team, please don’t delay.
Nominations must close next Saturday and unfortunately no extension is possible. You may obtain a nomination form from the Pro-Shop.
Greg Markey
Team Co-Ordinator

The Colossus of Cranbourne!
Ian Colthart not only completed a Trifecta by winning 3 rounds: Monday’s comp. on 41pts, then last Wednesdays American Foursomes with 69nett & last Monday’s comp. on 36pts.

He ALSO completed a Quadrella by birdying the 17th hole 4x times within 2 days!! (With a little help from his partner to get him onto the green…!!)
A Colossus effort Ian!! Well Done!

SEPTEMBER - Member of the Month

Our Member of the Month is Fay Joske.
Well done Faye and enjoy your day on us!

PRACTICE PUTTING GREEN
Flood lights have been installed over the practice putting green to give members the opportunity to practice their putting once the sun has gone down. They operate on a timer system, and once the weather improves, they will be set to run for 2 hours once the sun goes down. The timer has been set to turn the lights on every morning from 6am to 7am to assist the morning players when they warm up. Obviously, these times will be adjusted when Daylight Saving starts later in the year.
On another matter, some members may have noticed some sets of foot prints on the green. We believe these have been made by individuals using the green to "drill" putt. This involves hitting multiple putts from the same position without moving. The Club requests that those members using this drill move around to spread the wear, rather than remaining in the one position for lengthy periods.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
DAY OF ATONEMENT
‰ On Saturday 18th September the Clubhouse will be closed in recognition of the Day of Atonement. The fixture book incorrectly states that the Club is holding a Stableford competition on this day. Per Clib policy, there will be no competition offered on the Day of Atonement, Jewish New Year, Christmas Day and Good Friday. Also, the semi final of the handicap matchplay event was scheduled to be played by this date – this has now been extended for a 2 week period and must be played by Saturday 2nd October.
13th HOLE
‰ The fairway bunker on the RHS of this hole is experiencing some drainage issues and has been declared through the green, and has now been designated as GUR – check the Local Rules before playing!
‰ To the left of the left hand side of the 13th hole, between the LHS fairway bunker and the green, has been designated OUT OF BOUNDS. Three of the remaining pine trees in this area have fallen during the week. Two of these trees are leaning against existing trees and could fall if the wind picks up. Members are advised to KEEP OUT of the designated danger zone this weekend. The will be clearly marked so if you tug one way left over the weekend on this hole, cut your losses and declare the ball lost!!

TRIVIA
Literature
1. This novel stirred up quite a controversy when it was published in 1955. Humbert Humbert, a man in his late thirties, falls passionately in love with a very young girl. The book was written by Vladimir Nabokov; what's the title?
2. He created the fictional place known as Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, home to Compsons and Snopes and Sutpens. Several books tell their story: "Light in August", "The Sound and the Fury", "As I Lay Dying" and "Absalom, Absalom!". He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949. Name this celebrated author.
3. Malcolm Lowry was the author of this highly regarded novel, the tale of a man bent on drinking himself to death. He is the ex-British Consul in Mexico; his estranged wife has just arrived there to try to salvage their marriage. The story transpires over a day in 1938 - the Day of the Dead, an important Mexican holiday. Name Malcom Lowry's book.
4. In 1993, this author received the Nobel Prize for Literature for her collected works. Among the titles: "Beloved", "Song of Solomon", "The Bluest Eye", "Tar Baby". She is one of the most respected writers in the world of literature - name the author.
5. This classic won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961 and is the writer's only novel. The tale is told from the point of view of the young daughter of Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch. Atticus agrees to defend a young black man accused of raping a white woman. This was not a popular move in the Deep South around the time of the Great Depression, when the story takes place. The book is titled "To Kill a Mockingbird". Who was the author?

KNOW YOUR RULES
5-3/5 Ball Embedded in Hazard Lifetd to Determine Whether Unfit for Play
Under Rule 5-3, a ball in a hazard may be lifted to determine whether it is unfit for play. If a ball embedded in a hazard is lifted to determine whether it is unfit for play and the lie is altered in the lifting process, does Rule 20-3b apply?

YOUR WALLET ACCOUNT . . .
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU
AND SAVE $$$$

The Club’s General Committee recently ratified an across the board loyalty discount of %5 on all food and beverage purchases made using your Wallet funds….the discount does not apply to special events like the Club’s Dinner Dance, or Melbourne Cup Day, but it does apply to every pot of beer, or steak sandwich you purchase using your wallet…
“What is the Wallet”, I hear you ask????
Every Club member has a Wallet Account that can be accessed at the Bar using your Golflink card….unlike the House Incentive, which is a compulsory amount invoiced with your fees that has a limited lifespan, the wallet is an account designed to allow members to deposit funds voluntarily, use them whenever they wish and the funds never expire…it allows you to come to the Club without cash or cards!!
“How do I put funds into my wallet account?” should be your next question…
It is simple….funds can be deposited at the Bar or the Office…all you need is your Golflink card…
“How do I get the %5 discount?” should be your last query…
Firstly, make sure you have funds in your wallet….account balances can be checked by the staff at either the Bar or Office. If you are “cashed up”, PLEASE INFORM the appropriate staff member at the Bar that you will be paying for your food and drink using your wallet account to avoid any delays…unfortunately, the system applies the discount in the charge window, not the payment window, SO the discount MUST be applied before the staff try to process the payment. If you do not instruct them initially that you are using your wallet, they will be forced to CANCEL the sale and start again….this potentially could cause some lengthy delays at the registers. We are hoping that the software providers will implement a discount button in the payment window but this development may take some time SO please take note of the need to inform staff up front in the interim period.
We hope that every member takes advantage of this innovation and starts to save $$$ on all their F&B purchases as of October 10th …

RULES ANSWER
Yes, see Note 2 to Rule 5-3. The same ruling would apply if the lie of a ball in a hazard is altered when the ball is lifted for identification (see the Note to Rule 12-2).

TRIVIA ANSWERS
1. Lolita
2. William Faulkner was born in 1897 in Mississippi. Like many of the best writers of his generation, he was mostly self-educated. He was a voracious reader all his life. Faulkner was famous for his intricate prose, and page-long sentences, the opposite of the spare style used by many writers of his period. He used many new literary methods, such as stream of consciousness and stories told from different points of view.
3. Under the Volcano. "Under the Volcano" was published in 1947 and is said to be semi-autobiographical. In 1998 it was rated number 11 on the list of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century compiled by the Modern Library.
4. Toni Morrison. Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford on 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, the second of four children. She read constantly as a child, and her father often told her folk stories of the black experience, which would later show up in her novels.
5. Harper Lee. Nelle Harper Lee was born in Alabama in 1926, the youngest of four children. After graduating from high school, she studied law at the University of Alabama for a time, then moved on to study at Oxford in England. She eventually moved to New York, signed on with an agent, and began to write. She finished "To Kill a Mockingbird" in 1959, and it was published in 1960. The book was an immediate bestseller and critical success, and she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. It is still a bestseller and an all-time favorite novel in the annals of American literature. Harper Lee makes no public appearances and doesn't give interviews. Except for a few brief essays, she has not published anything since her first novel.
